What are the goals of our e-waste campaign?

The primary goal of our website is to raise public awareness about environmental issues. Our e-waste campaign encourages the proper disposal of damaged or unwanted electric and electronic devices. Discarding e-waste in regular trash leads to landfill space occupation and soil contamination, as these devices contain harmful substances like lead, cadmium, and mercury. These materials can seep into the ground, contaminating water, air, soil, and ecosystems. Proper recycling can help mitigate these issues.

In South Africa, starting from 5 November 2021, manufacturers are required to handle the end-of-life management of their products. Electronic waste must be recycled by authorised facilities and not disposed of in landfills, per the National Environmental Management: Waste Act.

Why is it important to recycle your e-waste?

Recycling your e-waste is an essential practice that carries significant environmental, economic, and social benefits. E-waste, or electronic waste, refers to discarded electrical or electronic devices, including computers, smartphones, televisions, and other gadgets. As technology continues to advance at a rapid pace, the volume of e-waste generated globally has reached alarming levels, making the responsible disposal of these items more crucial than ever.

Recycling electronic waste reduces environmental harm by stopping hazardous substances and brominated flame retardants present in electronics from contaminating soil and groundwater, thereby safeguarding the health of humans and wildlife. Additionally, recycling e-waste conserves natural resources by retrieving valuable materials like gold, silver, palladium, and rare earth elements. This reduces the need for mining, which frequently devastates habitats and increases carbon emissions. Recycling also reduces the energy needed to manufacture new electronic devices.

Recycling e-waste economically creates jobs and stimulates local economies by requiring skilled labour for collection, sorting, and processing. Supporting these initiatives fosters green jobs and sustainable growth, while offering cost savings for manufacturers using recycled materials. Socially, responsible e-waste recycling raises awareness and education about environmental sustainability. Participation in these programs promotes a culture of responsibility, encouraging environmentally conscious choices regarding electronic devices.

In conclusion, recycling your e-waste is not merely an option but a necessary action that benefits the environment, conserves valuable resources, supports economic growth, and fosters social responsibility. By understanding the significance of e-waste recycling and actively participating in it, individuals can play a vital role in creating a healthier planet for future generations.

Feedback on the Walker Drive Shopping Centre E-waste Campaign

Thank you to the following people:

  • Sharee from Walker Drive Shopping Centre for allowing us to set up our e-waste drop off point in the shopping center car park.

  • Megan from PE Metals and E-waste Recyclers for collecting the e-waste and handling the recycling.

  • Algoa FM for featuring our campaign on their events page, along with several presenters who highlighted our campaign to their audience.

  • We also appreciate our friends for sharing our posts on Facebook.

  • To Dane at Dijon Pharmacy for supplying the boxes used for e-waste collection.

  • A huge THANK YOU to the recyclers who proactively supported our collection campaign, with some even traveling from various parts of the city to participate.

Unfortunately, we were somewhat disappointed with the turnout, but in the end, the environment benefited as the collected items will be recycled instead of going to landfill.
